TLF hosts holiday programme after 10 staff members complete Entering the World of Children

School holidays are fun, and for the kids in an impoverished inner-city community in Pretoria, the recent school holiday turned out to be LOADS of fun.Petra Institute and the Tshwane Leadership Foundation (TLF) have a long-standing partnership. We recently presented our Entering the World of Children course to 10 staff members of the TLF.Following this, a two-week long programme was held for 70 children from this inner-city community. The programme consisted of praise and worship (which the kids loved), Bible stories, arts and craft, and they received healthy meals.Through the Bible stories, the theme of bullying was discussed by looking at the lives of Moses, David, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and Daniel and how they responded to opposition and harassment.

A research component

Apart from teaching children the Word of God and taking part in praise and worship, staff used this opportunity to gather information for a research project on children’s rights in Tshwane.

Children were asked questions about:

  • How safe and welcome they feel in their community; and whether they feel they have:
  • a voice in the community; and
  • the right to participate at home, in school and in the community

Petra Institute Course: Relational Family Ministry

Through the training in our Entering the World of Children course, staff at the Tshwane Leadership Foundation learned how to build trusting relationships with children through storytelling, games, music, humour and play.
This resulted in gathering information from the children in a playful way and in a safe environment where they could respond, based on a relationship of trust and respect.
